About Andrew

Based in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Andrew James is a highly sought after Artist, who has worked on many prestigious commissions of public figures. Wonderfully passionate, Andrew is renown for capturing incredible likeness and energy of his subjects through his sumptuously rigorous and painterly approach. You can discover more about Andrew at the NEAC (New English Art Club) and RP (Royal Society of Portrait Painter) websites.

Method of Working

I work from photographs, life and imagination: All are equal as the work’s outcome is all that matters. I add and subtract continuously until a richness of illusion and surface is achieved, as well as psychological depth.

Painting Technique

Using primarily oil paint, I work with broad, very direct, freely-applied gestural marks, through to finely modulated colour relationships. Seeking a wide spectrum of painterly qualities to bring likeness, life and an energised density, to every subject.

Andrew James is one of the UK's leading portrait painters and it was an absolute privilege to be able to commission him. A joyful process from start to finish and delighted with the outcome.

The most compelling quality in Andrew’s craft is his unique and vital relationship to paint itself. This strongly sets him apart from so many of his peers. He has always understood what paint is and what it does. His marvellous handling of pigment has been hard won, with a great deal of his time and focus being spent at the canvas. Yet, it is this hypersensitivity to his medium as an organic thing in itself which distinguishes his painting.
